A planning inspector has rejected an appeal by developer CALA Homes against refusal by WODC of an application for permission to build 68 homes in Stonesfield. This is important to Burford because the site at Stonesfield, together with Cole’s Field and two others in the area, had been originally earmarked in the draft local plan as suitable for development. The sites were then taken out on the ground that they were afforded special protection as they were within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and should not be developed unless exceptional circumstances could be shown to exist. CALA nevertheless pressed on with their application. If the appeal had succeeded this might have blown a hole in the West Oxfordshire Local Plan 2031 less than year after it was adopted and created a precedent for other applications within the AONB.
