The environment secretary says the government is thinking of creating a new National Park. The location has not yet been revealed but the front runners are the Cotswolds, the Chilterns and parts of Dorset. A review of National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the Cotswolds being one of the latter)
recommended that all three should become National Parks but it seems that only one will do so.
There has been local pressure to make the Cotswolds a National Park but this has been opposed by local councils since it would mean some of their powers being handed over to the new National Park authority. As we are reminded at this time of year, turkeys rarely vote for Christmas.
